Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd released the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission 300-page final report in Canberra today.

The Federal Government expects to respond to the 123 recommendations it contains within 6 months.

Nine of the recommendations (115 - 123) relate to implementing a national e-health system.

The report recommends the smart use of data, information and communication to support an agile self improving system including:
+ a transforming e-health agenda
+ a person-controlled electronic health record for each Australian by 2012
+ ensuring access to national broadband and telecommunication networks to fulfil the promise of e-health
+ expediting agreement on a strengthened national leadership structure for implementing a National Action Plan on e-Health
+ the development of Healthy Australia Goals 2020 - the first in a rolling series of ten year goals
+ promoting a culture of continuous improvement through health performance reporting
